I personally think arch and mobian are the best options right now, using the phosh UI (I like gnome-mobile as well, but it is not as mobile friendly as phosh)

Now to the hardware part, you have basically two options:

1. Use a phone where most drivers are in the mainline kernel, but with bad performance due to weak SoC (e.g. pine phone pro)
2. Use a phone with strong(er) SoC but relay on custom kernel from the phone brand, locking you in place of the version of the kernel they modified (e.g. oneplus 6, I think)

When we come to App support; you mostly have to rely on webApps for proprietary services like train ticket, uber, etc.

For massages, I would recommend a Matrix server and the various bridges to third party messaging services that exist for it (be aware that some services consider a connection via bridge as incompatible with their ToS and may block you)

I would love a variant that is like, if you stop delivering security and minor fixes/backports to a device, you have to give access to root or better even to the bootloader.

I have 3 attempts running parallel 😇

1. GBA Universe -> all GBA cartages and a gamecube with pokemon box (about 80% missing event Pokemon, but I plan to use the recreated gba event distribution roms which I save on a bootleg gba cartige to use via game link cable)
2. 3ds Universe -> all Pokemon digital on 3ds with PLSM for storage and events (about 10% as this is most recent setup and I have limited time as an adult
3. switch universe -> my relative big collection on Pokemon home, where I uploaded anything that was on bank prior my 3ds/switch split, is now the storage my son uses, who has the goal to complete the shield pokedex. I think we are on something like 70% on the home pokedex.

I play my emerald on my 3ds using an injected Virtual Console game installed via CIA (or FBI, 😂 often confuse the two), I think it is .cia file installed via FBI App.

Additionally to that, I use PKSM App on my 3ds in order to enable events and transfer Pokemon from game to game (like Pokemon bank)

Like this, I have all Pokemon games installed from blue/red to UltraSun/UltraMoon and can convert Pokemon up and down
