Autism@lemmy.world•Nuggets vs Tots. Which is which? I will tell you nots.English
2·3 months agoI’m not sure if you can get it outside of the UK, but I always loved Red’s Unholy BBQ Sauce.
Beechwood smoke (i.e. most hot dogs) and the smell of some cements are quite bad for me.
Hey, I like being autistic.

14·9 months agoI can sometimes do a sort of manual override and force my brain to behave a certain way. Doesn’t always work for very long, though, and it’s also worth noting I’m quite low (if there is such a thing as a low) on the spectrum.EDIT: Turns out this is masking. Please ignore me.

1·10 months agoThe boot issue is definitely hardware related. The machine doesn’t even power on the display before restarting.

44·10 months agoThree reasons for me:
- DNF can be kinda slow
- Fedora is owned by Red Hat, which is owned by IBM, which is American and also assisted the Axis powers during WWII.
- SELinux was created by the NSA. I know it’s FOSS, but I don’t feel I can trust any three-letter agency.

Autism@lemmy.world•What's the appropriate response to "What's up?"English
5·11 months agoMy flatmate says this whenever he comes in. I think he’s just saying hello, but I always end up explaining in detail whatever nerdy shit I’m doing at that moment.

Autism@lemmy.world•As an autistic person how do you stay motivated (more specifically doing long tasks)?English
5·1 year agoI essentially gaslight myself into thinking I’m finding the activity fun. I also find that music helps, as does finding a rhythm in the activity.
Of course, I’m generally fine with long tasks anyway, so your mileage may vary.
However, this guy has actually switched to Linux, and is willing to adapt and learn how to use it.

Autism@lemmy.world•What autism diagnosis does everyone have?English
5·1 year agoI’ve been referred for diagnosis, but I haven’t had any official diagnosis as of yet. However, all signs point towards yes.
Symptoms and stuff
- Sensory issues, mainly related to touch, which go back to when I was about 4.
- Infodumping about niche and obsessive interests.
- Relating to other autistic people.
- Other autistic people assuming I am autistic from my behaviour.
- Brilliant memory for things that interest me; crap memory for everything else
- I am strangely lucid when drunk, although I have difficulty with coordination and memory.
- Face-blindness (in some cases).
- I suffer from depression.
- I am not the worst at picking up social cues and identifying sarcasm, but only if it is done in the sarcastic voice, in context, or with a tone indicator/explanation.
- I tend not to “get” unspoken rules.
- I often require explicit instructions to know what to do.
- I am LGBTQ+ (see my Pronouns.cc), which is positively correlated with autism. [Source]
- My Dad, Uncle, and Grandad are almost certainly autistic, and I see symptoms in my brother.
- My cousin is autistic.
- I was proficient in my speech and writing from a young age, and it took me about a year to “get” what school was about after I joined. I used to devour books, until the first round of exams took away my time and I started spending more time on the internet.
On top of that, the online tests I’ve been sent all come back more-or-less positive.
It’s okay. I’ll probably end up switching to Arch, though.
It works, but there are a couple of issues:
- HiDPI is not supported by cwm, so I’ve had to do “duct tape” fixes on everything (changing .Xresources, changing GTK conf files, increasing the font size in polybar). Qt apps aren’t playing ball.
- The WiFi card isn’t supported by any BSD, so I’m using a dongle.
- The fan doesn’t come on as often as it does on macOS, so the MacBook can get rather hot.
- The headphone jack supports optical jacks as well as standard 3.5mm ones. Under OpenBSD, however, the LED inside is constantly on. This isn’t a problem, but it’s not normal.
- Polybar can’t seem to access any system information (e.g. disk usage), but I suspect that has nothing to do with the hardware.

(I realise this doesn’t make complete sense. I think I was probably a little drunk when I made this. The label on Earth shouldn’t be there."
