Technology@lemmy.world•‘Has flat buttocks,’ ‘cusses when scared’: Amazon keeps shockingly specific customer profilesEnglish
2·4 days agoI heard advertisers consider young parents the most profitable demographic, so anything childcare related is weighted very heavily in their models. I don’t have a source though

16·4 days agoI wouldn’t celebrate prematurely. It could very well mean that both German and American Amazon profile you, but American is just more transparent about it because Americans aren’t as spooked by surveillance as Germans are.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

9·9 days agoInterestingly the website menu only links to Privacy page, while the link to the actual privacy policy is in the bottom of the page.
I skimmed through it, haven’t found anything terrible, or any inconsistencies between Privacy and Privacy Policies. But maybe someone has a sharper eye than I do on privacy policies.
Also, I wonder what model is it under the hood. Truth Social was found out to be an illegal fork of Mastodon, so maybe this America AI was some open-weights model too?

5·12 days agoBing and Google. Separate index so far only available for France.
I use it anyway, I like how it shows climate impact I made by using Ecosia with ads (right now it’s 3 trees planted, 22 square meters of land restored).
I use DDG when I need to search pictures though, because Ecosia doesn’t have “no AI pictures” toggle, so it’s all AI slop.

3·17 days agoI am surprised they actually didn’t see it. When gamepass was introduced, it seemed like insanity - how is $10 subscription with access to $60 titles is going to pay off, this makes no sense. Well… It didn’t.

2·20 days agoThis is a mindset I have been leaning towards recently too. Earning NTs approval isn’t worth the effort. They will predominantly consider you weird and exclude, as for NT conformity is the most important value. But it doesn’t mean I am bad, or that they are bad. Just different and incompatible. So no need to waste your time with them.

5·20 days agoI feel you here. I also sometimes hope maybe people will realize shit I see now, after seeing the consequences of their actions years later.
But (neurotypical) people are so bad at cause and effect, and have Goldfish memory, and have a habit to externalize blame and responsibility on everything and everyone but themselves, and accepting horrifying stuff as “new normal” with zero resistance.
I stopped hoping anyone would realize anything.
Flathub sandboxes applications to prevent them from infecting the system if app gets hacked, and lets you control permissions for each app, like microphone, camera etc.
But they are still work in progress and easily circumvented, thus I called them only minor improvements.
The only real issue with Ubuntu is it uses Snap app store instead of Flathub app store.
Flathub has more apps, is faster, and has some minor security improvements. Linux Mint uses Flathub.
HOWEVER, you can add Flathub as additional source in Ubuntu app store app, and use Flathub exclusively.
In that case, no real difference between Ubuntu and Linux Mint other than UI.
I stay up late because AuDHD makes it difficult to switch activities.
I can’t get up from bed without it taking 5 hours, nor I can go to sleep without it taking 5 hours.
Everything takes 5 hours

2·1 month agoI managed to squeeze 5 years out of a $200 budget phone. 7 years on mid-range or flagship is trivial.
Especially as new Pixels have lots of features to improve battery longevity:
-
charging only up to 80%,
-
OLED display that turns off pitch black pixels. Many apps nowadays have pitch black themes, and you can set wallpapers to pitch black,
-
limit display smoothness to 60 Hz,
-
battery saving mode,
-
dark mode,
-
turn off background usage for individual or all apps
