  • That makes sense. Most people, especially so gamers, are not good at expression their concerns or even know why it is a problem to them. I actually meant my original comment about “excuse not to like the game”, just expressed it wrongly myself. The irony right now.

I actually meant what you say, by people not knowing how to express some other issues, or not thinking about it (but being affected), the focus goes to more obvious and easy to point issues. And to some extend it is actually an excuse, because not having seemless landing I think wouldn’t be a big deal if everyone had fun.

But maybe I’m wrong about this, because games and gamers evolve too. And for such simulation styled games going in and out of planets its a given to them to have a feature like seemless transitions. So when I say that I struggle how this is a game breaking issue to them to a point the refund or stop playing, or don’t even buy it, it sounds too extreme. Especially players who didn’t experience the game yet and never will just because of it.

  • First, two days ago there there was a post that might interest you (BTW I still don’t get how to link properly in Lemmy): https://lemmy.ml/post/53788147 - Opinions on Niri (and scrollable window managers)?

I always found Niri intriguing. But never tried this type of window managing, because two reasons: a) if windows are layed out out of my view, I still have to scroll or search otherwise, so it is it really a win against floating windows? At least this was my thought process, and b) the automatic tiling is in my flesh and blood, not sure how this would affect me as my thinking and every operation is hard wired to it. But tiling of windows comes with their own problems as you know.

Opening a window that is basically fullscreen or its own size without getting tiled, has its pros. I don’t use Niri, but the KDE extension “Karousel” works pretty well so far. I can still float single window or put them in a stack, or tile (up and bottom part of a group), and I still have my multiple desktops. So it’s a bit weird at the moment, but maybe just need time to get used to it and to rewire some of my brain. It’s too early to talk about experience and what issues could popup. This is my current situation and thoughts about the Niri concept (just not Niri directly).

  • I was tiling window manager user too (mainly qtile), nowadays I’m on KDE using extensions to emulate those tiling features. Krohnkite is pretty good, once setup with all the keys and other optional stuff like removing window titles and so on. Recently even switch to a Niri like extension, called Karousel, but this one doesn’t support multi monitors. So I end up getting the KDE set with a tiling experience.

COSMIC will have a builtin support for tiling too, with a seamless integration. So maybe this could be something you explore too.

  • Ever since I tried tiling window managers, I can’t go back to traditional style of handling windows anymore. Nowadays I’m on KDE, but I use extensions to automatically tile every window I open and close. Single applications are stretched to fullscreen, and every opened up window would then scale the applications to half screen and so on. There are different logics and algorithms (known as layouts) how this can work. Multi virtual desktops are a must with this philosophy, when opening and grouping multiple applications. In general automatic tiling (with manual intervention and rules for specific windows) does have its own problems sometimes.

Recently, and I mean since yesterday, I changed the philosophy to a different philosophy. I’m currently on an endless tiler, where windows are opened up and can be scrolled from left to right on the screen. The most prominent of these type of window managers would be Niri, but I use an extension on KDE to emulate this behavior.

  • Though I think it would have been overlooked if the game was… good? At the very least, if it was way less bloated with low effort copy pasted fluff content. Complaints like this only tend to become so focal when people have more disappointment to express than meaningful critique can adequately convey.

Guess this is a good point here. It’s an easy point to talk about specific failures (from perspective of the player) when they don’t like the game much. To me it sounds like an excuse not to play or not to like, and this is something they can blame. I don’t know for me it wouldn’t be a big deal, at least not to this scale. I get that many and long loading screens are terrible. Maybe I’m not the person looking into a virtual reality like immersion and are not affected by such details, therefore don’t have the empathy for players missing this feature.

  • Sure, but I think the point is that most people don’t even use data=journal option with EXT4. If I understand it right. But I get it, EXT4 is a common and stable and important part of Linux. Removing any feature, even if it not that many uses them, sounds wrong to me too. My previous point was actually trying to define if this falls into breaking userspace, and I just took a random example that affects userspace too. Because Linus doesn’t say “we are only allowed to break userspace, if just a few people use it”, he does not want do it at all. My point was, a driver in Kernel doesn’t fall under userspace.

  • Thanks, I figured out how to do this in Karousel right after I asked you. Hmm, do you miss a specific feature from your previous auto tiling experience? What I really like about this setup is, that certain windows will respect their sizes. To be honest this was a bit annoying in auto tilers. Guess there is less need for application specific rules and handling.

Offtopic: I just noticed your “Show Sidebar” button is on the same place as mine in Firefox.

  • Hey, I just wanted report that the extension Karousel in KDE works only with single monitor. It was bugged because it does not support multi monitor, as I thought. I’m trying it out now and wanted mention this here in case someone wants to use it too. How do you deal with if you need all windows appear on a single screen at the same time? In example for certain use cases I want to split in a quarter layout. Does Niri support two windows tiled bottom half and top half?

Edit: Found shortcuts that enable this in Karousel. Hmm, I start digging this now. I really don’t want to switch off KDE, but if I do, Niri might be a contender as next option. Need to see if this workflow works for me. :-)
