We watch YouTube Premium 95% of the time. No more cable TV. We have Netflix and a few of the other services, but YT has the content we usually want to watch.

YouTube feels almost as bad as paying for cable tbh. Maybe worse because at least the cable companies don’t pretend not to be evil

If you’re talking about the ads, the viewer experience with and without ads is night and day.

I’ll never forgive them for taking away features and locking them behind paywalls. Also, the way they harass me to buy premium has made me permanently refuse it. I don’t care if it’s the best deal In the world they’ll just never get money from me at this point. So, you could say I’m a little biased on top of the whole Google is evil and I don’t want to ever give them money thing. Especially since they’ve been selling me for decades. They can suck an egg lol

That’s kind of a severe stance, there mate, seeing as how I guarantee that you have a hemail account or use Google search or use an Android phone or run a Chrome browser. Could you get away from not using some of those things? Sure. But no way have you de-Google-fied your entire life.

The only thing from your list that still applies is being stuck with the android OS. It’s super weird that you think I should have some kind of loyalty to them because I’m forced to use one of their services lol. Being stuck with android isn’t the same as not wanting to actively support them directly with money

                loyalty

I don’t think I have used that word in the slightest bit. Not even implied it. So not sure where that came from.

And saying that one uses Android after your rather sever stance against Google is rather ridiculous. You can’t just brush that off as no big deal seeing as how important a phone is in day-to-day life these days. Maybe tone down the rhetoric a few notches if you still use one of their crown jewel products.

How is it ridiculous? I don’t like the electric company but I still pay them because they’re what’s available. I’m still extremely angry at them for raising our rates this year while not touching the rates for businesses. By your logic I can’t really complain because I still technically use the service?

My alternative is to go to what? Apple? Bleh. I actually like them a little more than Google/Samsung for their policies but the way they lock you into their ecosystem pisses me off and I think iPhones are boring.

So what else? Some knockoff third party unofficial OS or Android clone that I’m nowhere near technically knowledgeable enough to deal with right now? Android is a bit of a necessary evil that I do my best to deal with. Nothing about that means I should just give Google more money when I do have other options. Using a service doesn’t mean you can’t criticize it. Especially if it’s a service that holds part of a monopoly.

Hmm I don’t know much about that OS, but I have read that you can use a raspberry pi or similar hooked up to your network to block ad domains or whatever before they even reach your device. There’s probably other options available that I haven’t looked into

Pihole and other DNS based blockers don’t work on YouTube. It serves ads from the same domain it serves ordinary videos.

Yeah. I could try pihole. I think that works well in general but now YouTube ads and videos come from the same servers.

Can you do that on the Nvidia Shield YT app (which is how we watch it on our TV)?
