Hi! Been trying the app and I love it. @[email protected]
Something that stood out to me as an app developer is that Product Sans is being used extensively in the UI. As far as I understand it’s not a font that can be licensed for use (only Google can use it).
I know it’s been asked before since some search results came up from reddit but there was no answer from the developer.
As someone who would want to use that font too could you explain how Sync is using it? Are you just ignoring the license or maybe it’s just a very similar font? Thanks!
My sources:
- https://old.reddit.com/r/redditsync/comments/13eychj/how_is_sync_able_to_use_google_sans/
- Edit: added unziping of the apk:
Sync would need a license to distribute a proprietary font.
But if it’s already on your phone, it’s totally fine for Sync to use it.
It is definitely not on my phone, I have a Samsung phone.
Sync bundles the font in the apk as you can easily see by unziping it:
It also includes Google Sans which is not licensable.
Shot in the dark here, but could it be that it’s just using your phone’s system font? Are you using a Pixel?
I’m also using a Pixel, but I noticed that there’s a selection called “system” in addition to the Product Sans. I did not know (what my own phone was using for a typeface and why)
Just curious, but what about others of you out there? If you have a non-Pixel device, now I’m curious as to what your typeface list looks like. (Obviously you don’t have to answer, it’s just an idle curiosity)
My Typeface list:
Looks the same to me. I’m guessing these are bundled within the app and then there’s the system option that will use whatever you choose on your system settings.
Although I don’t have any idea about how it can be included, it’s at least curious
Samsung phone. You can pick Product Sans as well as other fonts from the settings in Sync actually.
Ah, right enough. Bit odd then!
