I’ve picked up a pair of refurbed Dell 8tb enterprise hard drives recently, and set them up in my Node 804 case in a ZFS striped mirror. Ever since, I’ve heard a lot of sound during IO that I didnt hear when I was using my single WD RED 4TB.
The sounds range from a soft knocking (I think these are normal writes) and then a bit of a brrrr (??) some other times. No clicks or grinding though.
While daily (quick) SMART reports in TrueNAS have come up clean since running these drives, I’m still a bit worried that I’ve not got enough vibration mitigation going on, or if the drives are simply omitting the necessary SMART data to diagnose a fault.
I could upload a video perhaps, but maybe I’m just paranoid!
Knocking is usually reads (from the header seeking), brrr is heavy writes.
What about ticking?
It it counting how many bits are left?
metronome for the other components to practice playing songs at the right bpm
Man, I don’t know. I wanna know too.
I got a refurb drive in 2019 that has been clicking and rumbling a little to moderately for 6 years now. Great value at this point, but it’s replacement is gathering dust at this point.
