The people who paid for the data centers will go bankrupt, the data centers themselves will be sold for pennies on the dollar, but then the people who bought those data centers for pennies on the dollar will be able to make profit renting inference for a lower price than those original investors could have sustained themselves on. So I’m expecting there’ll still be plenty of AI horsepower churning away, it’ll just be doing it more cheaply and not doing it under the banners of the current incumbents.

First movers often fail in this manner, they spend a lot of money making mistakes and discoveries that later followers can make use of for cheap.

Also lots of people in threads like these are assuming that “the AI bubble pops” means “everybody stops using AI and it all goes back to the way things were before ChatGPT came along.” There’s still an enormous demand for AI inference, that’s simply not going to go away. People will still want to use AI. The bubble popping would mean a big drop in resources being spent on developing new models, that’s all. It’d help the prices somewhat in the short term. But in the long term we simply need more chip foundries.

Ah, so as this progresses the Republicans steadily run out of “competent” lawyers because they keep getting disbarred (or quitting to save their legal skins), leaving them with increasingly incompetent ones that have an even harder time accomplishing stuff.

Here’s hoping their legal wells run dry quickly, I suppose.

Federal judges still do threaten and issue contempt of court penalties and disciplinary referrals to officials who blatantly disobey court orders.

I guess this is my main point of concern right now, as an outsider. I know that the courts are still ruling against Trump and the Republicans fairly regularly, but then I hear about situations where they’re simply ignoring the courts’ rulings and little seems to actually happen as a result.

What do those “disciplinary referrals” actually do? Do people actually get fired, or is it just something else for the Republicans to ignore?

That’s not how supply and demand works. When a market is out of economic equilibrium like this, with demand sharply rising, that is literally what drives competitors to arise and to try to increase supply to match. This is fertile ground for exactly that outcome to happen.

Heh, I downloaded that one just recently, I read that it was good at natural prose and I’ve been working on a little pet project to make a framework for auto-writing short stories based on a simple premise. Haven’t tested it extensively yet though.

Sadly they don’t seem to have 36B-A3B models on their roadmap any more, they didn’t do one for 3.8 either. I agree it was a nice sweet spot between speed and capability, I still use the 3.6 version of 36B-A3B for larger-scale local work. Maybe someone else will aim for that. Or Qwen4 will do something new with the architecture that makes it unnecessary.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Qwen4 is like. 3.8 was just 3.6 with additional training, my understanding is that Qwen4 is new from the ground up.

I’ve spent the last week or so coding an application using nothing but Qwen3.8-27B. I was curious how much I could do entirely with a local model running on my own personal hardware, and it turns out the answer was “everything.”

Granted, it’s not the fanciest application. But it’s fun.

To avoid the word repetition I propose “Super Duper Intelligence.”

If that ends up being our successors and legacy to the universe I’d at least like it to be saddled with a silly name so they’ll remember us.
