  • Yup, and there’s a little quid pro quo, too: You have to stay but they make you president in the corporate structure over the acquisition and probably get stock offerings. Kind of expected, but I’m sure it’s nice to be able to say you’re a senior VP or whatever in a much bigger company.

They were just counting down the days for when their contracts were up.

Kind of a shame but also understandable. You put your life, blood sweat and tears, all the overtime, every waking moment, to build something and if the opportunity to cash out arrives they almost always take it. Otherwise they’re just riding the wolf by the ears until they crash from burnout.

  • Pretty interesting that both Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka (the two remaining co-founders by the time of the EA acquisition) both bailed at the same time in 2012. After quite a number of lead developers and writers jumped ship.

So, it took 5 years of trying to tough it out under corporate ownership before they were like ‘this is bullshit, let’s go’.

And BioWare, who made so many great titles, didn’t produce anything particularly noteworthy after that.

  • Honkai Star Rail has taken over my life, so I get where you’re coming from.

What makes it so addictive for me was stumbling upon the fact that under the surface layer of the game/plot Hoyo is making very deep meta commentary about philosophical stances. And I’m not talking about those kinds of cheap plot enhancing surface concepts that games like to toss in to make it seem deep. I mean that the entire thing is built around the exploration of these concepts. It’s philosophical inquiry first, game second. It’s a ludicrous attempt that shouldn’t make any money at all, but the bulk of what they are saying is hidden and the flashy game stuff is promoted so it works.

Because it’s couched in allegory and the playerbase is like 15, nobody believes me, lol. But there are videos from a guy who’s obviously a phd in philosophy who breaks down each chapter and explains it.

Thankfully I am too much of a miser to be a gambling addict.

  • Lol, somebody you don’t know knows where you’re at right now. Literally, your exact location right now. And where you’ve been today, and everywhere you’ve been for the last year. And where you’re most likely going in the next few hours. Everything you’ve bought, said, and texted. What vehicles you own, your entire family and relationship history. Your dna, fingerprint, retina pattern, and medical history. And on and on.

And we just keep giving it to them.

I mean, you are absolutely correct in your statement but people have no idea how much of the infrastructure is already in place and humming along. Our only momentary grace is that it still revolves around merchants and different data points are consolidated in various countries rather than accessible by any one group worldwide. Yet. But you can buy profiles of anyone. Well, we can’t but governments can.

International corporations are pushing this hard, and have been laying the ground work for the last 20 years, and their biggest clients, countries, are eating it up.

All this stuff coming up recently about mics in your electronics, flock cameras, AI in everything, is just a tiny icicle sticking up from the massive glacier that is the data collection that has been going full steam since the 2000s. We are surprised miners standing around a recently discovered dead canary trying to decide if we should exit the mine.

The trap has already been sprung.
