  • You know, you’re right. I’m weird. I love being weird. I associate with weird people, generally those who would also self-identify as weird.

It’s a fluid word that can be used in a lot of weird ways.

But it has never bothered me that it’s used in this context personally. I understand it’s directed at people who are just not right, and in other times that could’ve included some of us.

It’s of course meant in the context of “You are acting unacceptably and we can’t be quiet about it anymore.”

And the meme came from Gov. Walz, who carves butter. That’s weird! In a strange and adorable Midwestern way.

There’s a whole range of possible symptomatic ‘quirks’ autistic people have. I wouldn’t go trying to determine “how autistic” you are in such a way.

If you go out of your way to try new foods, but settle in on the one thing you like and keep getting it, to me that would seem a little obsessive from both sides.

“I must try everything so I know the best one.”

Most people would go “Hmm, what do I want tonight?” That’s the ‘normal’.

Me, I was very picky as a kid. Then I opened up my palate and tried a bunch of new things, surprising relatives who had known me my whole life.

Then I discovered I have serious sensitivities, which is probably why as a kid I stuck with just a few foods.

But in the end I don’t know I am autistic. I’d just be surprised if I wasn’t.

  • Failing is a part of success. You learn what didn’t work, refine your technique, and try again.

If all you do is succeed, you don’t know why and can’t learn from it.

Success is the work of trying and failing, repeatedly, until what you’re doing doesn’t look like failing to outsiders. But even then you know what was wrong with your successes.

  • I’m a huge nerd. I love triggering people’s interests.

But one day at the local coffee house someone was wearing an O.G.R.E t-shirt, a very old game. And I’d been an active gamer in that era but never played that one.

This was simply unacceptable! He had to describe the game in great detail, and I’ll admit I had a good time letting him let it all out.

It’s fun! I’m sure he remembers that day when someone actually knew what his shirt was about.
