  • No impact on employment? How so?

Weren’t there layoffs due to AI implementation, expected or actual? Or is the time and work-hours needed to correct and understand what AI is doing not realizing the expected savings?

Also, AI/LLM in the popular over-invested sense is the Tesla FSD of corporate tools. A badly designed, over-promised system that doesn’t live up to the hype and far too often commits errors, some of which are lethal or have other serious consequences.

IMO AI should be a tool used in parallel with humans, like research or medical diagnostics, able to see things we might miss or rapidly try new multi-step combinations we might not think of. Not as a human replacement.

  • Boutique PC building has been getting expensive since crypto hoarders bought up GPUs and scalpers drove the prices through the roof pushing it further out of reach. We had a couple early hits with the HDD and memory shortages due to factory damage, those were relatively short lived, crypto otoh was long-term. Now we’ve got LLM datacenters hoarding all the hardware along with manufacturers perfectly happy to allow scarcity to drive up prices.

On top of all that we’re seeing less-subtle suggestions to kill the personal PC and force everyone into a subscription model for everything.

Personally I’d wait for any dip in the market and build another good quality PC. I figure there’s not too many years left before they get their wish.

  • There was nothing hostile in what I said. Maybe you don’t like being proven wrog? I didn’t expect anything of you much less a hyperbolic research paper, but nonetheless you chose hyperbole and shuffled the goalposts instead of actually continuing the discussion. I never said when I bought the games, but convenient of you to arbitrarily decide how old a game is before it’s not worth it for you. Nonetheless they’re on sale by your own admission, so that blows your “rarely” out of the water while you ignore BF6 being repeatedly on sale. But I suppose you’ll make excuses about that too?

  • I’ll cautiously second the first part with a variation. Using the calendar as “oh shit” dates only seems to work for us for things that have burned us before and we apply the “oh shit” factor to that date. Like a payment due and we have it marked to post it 5 days earlier, the panic has to be about getting it out on the dssignated day.

    Second part…whatever works.
