2·23 days agoFun idea for game!
Same, this is why I like Hyper Light Drifter. Boss fights are hard, but when die you are instantly back at the fight.
I tried playing the Titan Souls but it was really annoying game. It is a boss rush game where both you are boss die in one hit. So some times you can die instantly when boss fight starts. Issue is that there is really long load times and you have to walk back to boss (and there isn’t even combat). Some times walking back to the boss takes longer than the time you fought the boss.

Game Development@programming.dev•Nearly 90% of videogame developers use AI agents, Google study showsEnglish
8·2 months agoStudy by Google who benefits from AI hype. Big doubt. But also I would be interested to know what “counts as using AI”. Doing one query once per month just to try solve some specific issue vs daily use/vibe coding.
I tried using AI to create my games, but most of the time it just got in the way. And now that I am more conscious about harm and issues of AI, I refuse to use it unless in really specific scenarios.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Creating similar service to AlternativeToEnglish
0·4 months agoThanks you for recommending, this looks interesting!
Exactly. Right now developers get good deals when adding their games to game pass and the game pass is pretty cheap, but after game passes become “the thing” and developers have to be in a game pass, it will get worse for developers and consumers.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Creating similar service to AlternativeToEnglish
0·4 months agoDoing moderation is something that I would not want to do at the start. At least in the start all items would be created by me. This would be a side project for me and all user submissions would be verified (if ever allowed). This would be more like personal list rather than huge community project. Maybe if this evolved overtime then it could be something else.
Yeah, wiki might be simplest solution for this, but I was wondering if there existed something more visually friendly. IMO wiki (similar to https://consumerrights.wiki/Main_Page) is less “pretty” to AlternativeTo. But using wiki could probably be starting point for this.

0·4 months agoThanks for recommendation. I am technical, but more on backend side rather than front end. I would love to use something that is opensource. This would probably work, but seems like I would need the create a lot of things “from scratch”. This would be a side project so I am looking something that would be simple as possible.

Game Development@programming.dev•What is the best way to start learning gamedev?
3·4 months agoIf you don’t have that much programming experience I would start with basic game dev tutorial for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulgh_neTJG8&list=PL6SABXRSlpH8CD71L7zye311cp9R4JazJ
After going over the tutorial I would continue either by starting your own project or cloning some existing game.
Edit: And game jams. Game jams are best way to force you to create something and finish it. This would be ideally after completing some tutorial that gives you understanding of how to create games with engine.

Sad to hear that company is not doing that great. Hyper Light Drifter is one of my favorite games. I never tried Hyper Light Breaker because of the mixed review and my having less time than usual to play games.
