World News@beehaw.org•Russia Weighs Curbing Diesel, Jet Fuel Exports as Attacks Grow
3·17 days agoRussia is considering limiting exports of diesel and jet fuel, according to Interfax, as refinery run rates fall to multi-year lows amid Ukraine’s escalating attacks.
Oil companies were advised to curb sales of oil products to foreign markets following a Tuesday meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on the domestic fuel market, the Russian news service reported, citing several people familiar with the situation. One of the people said that the decision to ban exports of diesel and jet fuel is at an advanced stage, but the date for the ban hasn’t yet been set, according to Interfax.

World News@beehaw.org•Russian oil exports slump as Ukraine hammers ports and refineries
12·2 months agoUkraine has succeeded in depriving Russia of much of the windfall profits it would have made from oil exports during March and April, as the war in the Gulf sent prices soaring to above $100 a barrel, a series of sources suggest.
Ukraine intensified a long-range strike campaign against Russian port and energy infrastructure on March 21 in a calculated bid to prevent Russia from offloading oil onto tankers and to counteract the suspension of US sanctions on Russian oil, which had been in place since 2022.

Technology@beehaw.org•Workers report watching Ray-Ban Meta-shot footage of people using the bathroom
35·3 months agoThe report pointed to, per the translation, a “stream of privacy-sensitive data that is fed straight into the tech giant’s systems,” and that makes Sama workers uncomfortable. The authors said that several people interviewed for the report said they have seen footage shot with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that shows people having sex and using the bathroom.
“I saw a video where a man puts the glasses on the bedside table and leaves the room. Shortly afterwards, his wife comes in and changes her clothes,” an anonymous Sama employee reportedly said, per the machine translation.
Another anonymous employee said that they have seen users’ partners come out of the bathroom naked.

World News@beehaw.org•Russian general shot several times in Moscow
12·4 months agoA high-profile general in Russia’s military has been shot several times and wounded in Moscow.
Lt Gen Vladimir Alekseyev was immediately taken to hospital after the attack in a residential building on the north-western outskirts of the city and his condition is unknown.
Alekseyev is a senior figure in the main directorate of Russia’s military general staff (GRU) and is the latest high-ranking military figure to have been targeted in the capital since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began almost four years ago.
He was placed under European Union sanctions after the GRU was accused of being behind a 2018 nerve agent attack in Salisbury in the UK.

10·5 months agoWith approval from both the US and China closing on the schedule laid out in December, ByteDance’s ownership of the new joint venture is now only 19.9 percent to satisfy the terms of the divest-or-ban law signed in 2024 by President Biden. The other 80.1 percent is owned by investment firm Silver Lake, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi investment firm MGX — the three “managing investors” that now hold 15 percent stakes — and several other smaller investors, like Michael Dell’s family investment firm.
