I don’t really derive a sense of accomplishment from it, so I don’t get the dopamine hit. It’s more write a simple bash script to do X because I hate working in that syntax, or this library has terrible documentation, tell me how I’m supposed to use it.

You still need to read and understand everything it writes, but it’s easier to validate something is correct sometimes rather than figure out the correct way to do something.

Also the freaking essays it writes as comments burying the useful information in the equivalent of a recipe blog post when you really just need assumptions about input, and side effects.

I read a decent number of papers. If you’re looking for something specific, and abstract isn’t enough. If you want to research something specific that’s not the core focus of the paper, you at least need to skim it.

If Hank Greene is understaffed, using AI to prefilter papers isn’t a terrible use of the technology.

He didn’t state what his actual process was. People assume that just means firing out a query and no bothering to check it, he said he uses it to summarize sources to see if they are worth reading. I don’t think that’s unreasonable if he still reads them.

Regarding using it to write scripts, I think if you use LLMs to generate something you are good at making and are picky and opinionated about, the review process very quickly makes you skeptical about the output.

Before the response, IP rights and environmental effects of LLMs are completely valid and are a valid reason for opposing them. Don’t just assume someone’s using it out of laziness instead of in an attempt to scale up their own work.

I think you can start with niches or regional groups, they then start inviting others in.

WhatsApp and Discord basically had to bootstrap themselves and did it through niches and meeting a clear market need but we’re then bought up by Facebook. There were plenty of group chat competitors and voice chat competitors.

A good product and marketing strategy can bootstrap an audience. You likely need to provide something beyond just a phone book. Even outside of Facebook there’s a million of those but getting an audience for a new product is far from impossible, tons of new games do it all the time.

Sounds like they just moved the research over to isomorphic labs, also even from the onset people quickly took the original approach and paper and made their own versions tuned for their needs.

Feels more like a research project having achieved its goals, the key players moved on, and they’re closing the Deepmind part of it as it’s not really useful anymore.

How fragile do you think workers are? No shit a strike harms the bottom line of the company as a whole. That’s the whole point.

It’s incumbent on the unions and workers to decide if them getting shafted in contract negotiations is disproportionate to how the company is doing as a whole or if it’s just the company actually not being able to afford raises or benefits (is the money really not there or is it getting hoarded by management)

If the company is actually not doing well, then laying off some people and trying to right the ship is preferable to everyone losing their jobs if it goes under. When deciding to strike you’re weighing if it’s because of management greed or the company actually not being able to afford the additional benefits.

As it is currently employees only get the downside when the market is weak, they don’t get the upside. Stocks mitigate that problem.

This is just from 10% of profit. Management barely noticed financially.

I get the issues with image generation and using text generation in scams etc. but as a professional coding tool (not just vibe coding slop) AI can be extremely helpful certain tasks, and this use case, where organizations just don’t have the resources to have a security expert pore through millions of lines of code for bugs, is a net positive.

I think this is a case of “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” we can absolutely still criticize the industry and specific companies for IP, societal, and environmental concerns but lets not turn away a win just because they’re causing harm elsewhere.

There’s an anecdote that comes up in software about people working on missile software not caring about memory leaks because it’s going to explode anyway before that becomes an issue.

Who cares about bugs in your software if it’s a hobby project that’s going to blow up anyway.

Also, including Claude doesn’t inherently mean vibe coded, it can be for writing tests, small components, or debugging.

Over the years I think I care less about some public apology or statement to accept that a creator has moved past old behavior (I assume you’re talking about the bridge, I don’t really follow PewDiePie).

We see too many fake apologies and if it’s been some time, apologizing just gives an opportunity for viewers to dogpile when someone is trying to move past something.

I think if it’s been a few years and he’s clearly shown to have grown past it, that’s enough for me. You never really know what a content creator’s private beliefs are just how they choose to use their public persona.

Hope it does well, but consider how hard it was to get people to move from WhatsApp to discord, getting them to use a niche federated option is going to be an uphill battle for any non-techie groups for a bit.
