This is an interesting idea. A few potential issues come to mind:

• In this system, each community needs moderators from each instance it is on. A small instance run by one person would face a challenge finding people to moderate potentially hundreds of communities.
• You mention that a user who doesn’t like their instance’s moderation can use a different instance, but this isn’t easy. There’s no account migration at the moment. This is more of an issue with the lack of that functionality, since there are many other reasons people would want to switch instances.
• If this was implemented, presumably it would require merging all existing communities that share names. There may be some big differences in the culture and content of these instances which could cause problems. You’ll find different content in the “memes” communities on lemmy.world, slrpnk.net, and hexbear.net.

I wouldn’t call an 8% drop “downfall”. I think it will shrink and grow over time, but I expect the growth pattern will be in waves - migrations of people coming in response to changes in Reddit or other causes, followed by periods of retraction as some people lose interest or decide it’s not for them.

From my feeling, it seems pretty steady at the moment. I wouldn’t mind if it got bigger, especially to make some more niche communities possible. But I’m not worried about it.

There are already Lemmy instances that don’t allow downvotes, like beehaw, so defederating seems kind of silly.

If a community is not very active but there are a lot of bot posts, it just feels like “lipstick on a pig” - they’re trying to make it seem more active than it really is, and diluting what little “real” activity there is.

I was just thinking earlier today, games could probably use AI to seamlessly work the player’s name into dialog. They would still hire voice actors, but insert whatever name the player chooses into the lines where it is mentioned. I feel like this isn’t too far away.
