1 year agoThere are two legitimate concerns about Signal: they use real phone numbers as identifiers, and you have to trust Signal as the server operator as they don’t allow their client to be used with other servers. While the server software is also open source, you have to trust that they’re running the same version in production.
If this turns out to be EU-only, then it’ll be useful for niche apps and ones that aren’t normally allowed (like emulators, third party YouTube apps, and other cool shit), but it won’t be commercially useful for the titans of tech like Google and Meta. Not a bad start.
