Autism@lemmy.world•I (40m) need advice dealing with overly-attached parents
2·6 days agoYes, I imagine that’s a significant part of it.
The next thing to do is to accept their behavior toward each other, that’s their relationship. Neither one of them is the good guy here, by the sounds of it, so don’t let them drag you intro that miserable world any more.
I think a lot of people go no contact because they can’t figure out how to just neutrally disengage. It’s a valid option, but I do think you could develop a selective kind of apathy for their nonsense and still appreciate their positive things they add to your life (if there are any?)

1·6 days agoI can appreciate why train-gang is a thing. Not my thing though; this picture has no effect on me.
Involuntarily rendered muted or, occasionally, enraged.
So, I’m not a diagnostician, but if you have above average ability to read social cues, then that sure sounds like it excludes a diagnosis of autism.
I’m glad you disqualified your opinion before you shared it because ability for reading cues is a very narrow aspect of what could contribute to difficult social interactions.
Some of us develop a heightened kind of vigilance for social cues because of how we’ve been punished for our natural lack of understanding them, and that doesn’t necessarily confer ANY ability to effectively act on those cues appropriately in the way we ought to.

6·7 days agoI have a very simple thought for you to consider.
Stop parenting your parents. Not your problem.
You can have a relationship with them if you can figure out how to offer them token sympathy for their self-inflicted miseries. You can’t get involved so much as to be a shoulder to cry on, and ear to bend for venting, or to help them with solutions.

1·7 days agoChange the wifi password and then ‘forget’ it if you’re that worried about that last bit. It’s just catastrophic anxiety though, just pointless worry and you can label it as such and disregard it.

6·8 days agoI’m confused. Do you feel guilty because you understand that you did something ‘wrong’, or is it more of a reaction to being punished from the ban?.
Here’s how I see it. If someone puts porn of themselves on the internet, then they have probably accepted that some of it will make its way around without their say-so. If they don’t expect that, well then thats a lesson for them to learn.
As far as Reddit goes, you should not care how Reddit (or its mods) judge you. I wonder if you are hypersensitive to some element of this story. Maybe the rejection, maybe being punished, maybe the idea of your wrongfulness.
IDK, idk you, I’m just hypothesizing, but you can make a decision about how much this actually matters. Try to do that and then just move forward, you will be fine again very quickly.
People like you to fit the mental model they have of you and tend to reject the infomration that doesn’t match what they already believe.
I got a new boss three months ago and they create chaos, stress, and uncertainty with their wildly inconsistent directives. I am driven to the edge of insanity multiple times per week an all I can do is try my best to disassociate and do the best I can with the work while doing the best I can to not give a fuck all-around.
And things are not calming down into a steady-state, its just more unhinged with each passing day.
I’m not really sure, but I appreciate the thought either way. :)
When someone says ‘OK boomer’; they are referring to your behaviour and the clear limitations that are being demonstrated in thinking, and the experiential gatekeeping of what is ‘right’. The confidence of ignorance. This drawing upon ‘evidence’ over at YouTube to defend that ignorance and support your bias…
This is why it is correct when u/Glytch uses it here, regardless of your physical age.
I find the only compliments dudes share are when you have the same ‘thing’ as them. Same shirt, same vehicle… same… no… nope. thats all of them.
So true!
When I bought my truck I said, “If you keep talking, I will buy it from somoene else. Let me drive and I will make my decision.”
You know, in true autistic fashion.
Not really confused by it, but I find it suspicious by default. Most of the time, I just say thank you to politely accept it.
Half the time, I tend to find that people are trying to just butter me up to get something out of me. Disingenuity is very grating on my sensibilities and it can lower my opinion of people who tend to behave in that way.
I used to take it personally, like that person thinks I’m dumb enough to buy into their petty manipulation. Now I understand that lots of people just carelessly, all-around, do this to score points they can cash in on later. I just pretend I don’t notice and say thank you anyway; I don’t think I could offer anything but a sincere compliment, myself.
Yeah, when people notice where you are putting your efforts. That’s really all that matters for the feel-good aspect of compliments.
It is a common human trait, regardless of neurotype.
