This isn’t news for us already on Linux so much as it is yet another signal to Windows users that gaming on Linux is viable and worth investigating.

GOG and CDPR are closely related, so if nothing else, this means a high likelihood of launch day support for The Witcher 4 on Linux (or at least Proton), and THAT is a big deal.

Of course, The Witcher 4 will work on Linux. Only kernel-level anti cheat and some obscure DRM are still blockers.
If you can buy it on GOG, it’s almost guaranteed to work with GE Proton on Linux.

For me it’s definitely more about legitimacy, recognition and signalling to the market.

This. I don’t use GOG much, primarily because I’m lazy and just want all my games in the same place, but this is still fantastic news! It’s one less barrier to ditching Windows as the defacto gaming os. It’s also signaling to developers that the market share of users they cut off by explicitly excluding Linux (through kernel anti cheat or however else) is growing.

Do cloud saves work yet? They haven’t turned themselves on for me by default, so I’m guessing Heroic still considers the feature to be unreliable. That and proper achievement integration are my two most desired features for an official client.

They’re never on by default, but you can turn them on for each game that supports it. I’ve never had trouble!

Well, I’ll give it another look. Last time I tried was almost two years ago, and I kept manual backups in case the cloud sync failed; the cloud sync failed, and I haven’t tried again since. It did come with a warning last time, so I figured if they were confident, it would be on by default.

Absolutely give it a try! It’s a good idea to keep the manual backups though too. I even backup my steam saves. If you want a tool that makes it easy try Ludusavi

        • To be fair, I’ve only seen it with the two more modern games I have on GOG and neither have multiplayer. All the actually old stuff doesn’t need Galaxy for squat. If you’re only using GOG for good old games, you may never have encountered it.

Which two? I buy modern games on GOG a lot these past two years.

EDIT: I think this might be a misunderstanding. If you go to your game library and try to download the game, “Download and Install Now” for GOG Galaxy is the first option, and the installer files may be collapsed by default. My understanding from looking through developer docs for GOG is that the DRM-free installer files are created for you automatically, so I don’t know how you would make a game require Galaxy.

No; when I try to launch the game from the .exe, it automatically opens Galaxy and only will run through Galaxy. If Galaxy isn’t installed, it gives an error saying it needs to be launched through Galaxy. It does this for both Mad Max and Saints Row 4; both were originally installed from the off-line installers downloaded from the website.

I don’t have Mad Max in my GOG library, but there are no complaints about DRM in the reviews or on its forums, and usually GOG folks will complain in one or both of those places whenever something’s foul, including multiplayer (as they should). It’s what got Hitman (2016) pulled from GOG, as while it’s technically playable from the start of the story through to the end, it requires online connectivity for its most compelling features beyond that. As for Saints Row IV, I just installed it from the installer executables and launched it with my internet completely disconnected, so if that was a faux pas for that game at one point in time, it has since been corrected. It does require Epic Online Services for multiplayer even though previous versions of the game supported LAN, but I only have Re-Elected in my library. Others, I think, got Re-Elected added to their library if they had the legacy version.

Also, both of those games are stretching the definition of “modern” at over 10 years old.

Only for multiplayer, unless I missed something. It’s their biggest glaring omission, but Galaxy is always optional or else their business model falls apart, and I understand that letting the platform take care of the multiplayer was an olive branch developers had been begging for.

But will it actually fix the numerous games that still ship with outdated dependencies without providing said dependencies?

Obviously not. They rather reinvent the wheel instead of just officially endorsing Heroic which already works well on Linux.
